By Stacey Parker

There are few places worldwide that can provide the visual impact that Namibia can offer. You have seascapes, colonial cities, wildlife and sand-dunes all in one trip! Namibia is a country with large open areas where you can fully appreciate Africa at its finest. It is not touristy and you will really discover a closeness to "mother earth" that it is tough to find elsewhere.

Namibia is divided into four major areas. To the north you have your Kavango and Caprivi regions which are the less dry areas of the country. Here you will find dense woodlands. The Himba tribe stay in the nearby Kaokoland in their typical manner and it is possible to find their village and talk to them to learn about their faith, their cuisine and their marriage ceremonies. The exact location of the settlement changes as they "relocate camp" rather regularly. Usually, the Himba people are quite tolerant of the vacationers and permit photos to be taken.

To the West you have your Namib Desert and Coastal plains. You mustn't miss out on the dune fields in the Namib-Naukluft Park and likewise the Sand Dunes in Sossusvlei, which are among the tallest in the world. You can also see the Museum and the aquarium or go fishing or quad-biking over the desert dunes or, if you are particularly daring, you can take a microlight plane over the desert to snap some memorable photographs.

Holidays to Namibia are not complete without a trip to the Eastward sloping central plateau, where you will see the Etosha Pan bordered by the Etosha National Park, which is said to be among the world's grandest national parks. The Etosha Pan is a salt pan that is fifty kilometers wide and one hundred and thirty kilometers long. The park is dotted with perennial springs and waterholes so there is lots of wildlife. Many of the animals have actually adapted to residing in Namibia, so there are many distinct species to be discovered, not excluding a special breed of lion. Game drives are readily available on open jeeps, escorted by rangers.

To the South you will see the Kalahari desert, which extends throughout the confining nations of South Africa and Botswana. Maybe this is the least fascinating area of the country, but if you happen to be there between September and October, you may want to find out if there are any flower shows. In these months, occasionally the desert is transformed into an astonishing variety of color as wild desert flowers bloom at the same time and cover the arid terrain as far as the eye can see.

You can then move inland and check out Windhoek, which is basically the economical heart of the country. It is found in the central highlands. Likewise you mustn't miss out on driving up Namibia's highest mountain, called Brandberg, which is two thousand five hundred and seventy three meters high.

Namibia is genuinely an unusual country. For photography enthusiasts, it is a once in a life time opportunity to take photos in some of the rarest settings you can ever see. Immersed in the sand and sun of this immense and lonesome land, you will virtually feel as if you originate from another planet altogether!
