The one thing that people always joke a car needs no matter how many gadgets and bells and whistles it may have is a universal cup holder. There have been vehicles that have been bought or turned down based on whether or not they had one or even where it was positioned in the car. They are more important that many people give them credit for.
It is often surprising how many times a designer will neglect to even include one in some of the newer concepts. Regardless of how much a car might be worth as well, no matter how exotic, or how much carbon fiber makes up the vehicle's frame, the cup holder is the one thing that every car needs. Every driver looks for one when they first enter a car during the initial drive as well.
The problem is that even though we want these features in our cars we end up using them for anything but our morning coffee. We place our cell phones in them, our music players and anything else. Loose change is always a good one. That is probably the most common thing found in a cars cup holder today.
The thought behind this was if the drinks were bigger people would also buy bugger meals in time. They claimed there was some subconscious thought that made us associate the large soda with a larger burger and fries. No matter if it is true or not the fact remained that we were getting used to the extra soda pop.
Today we have devices that can handle all of it. Our cell phones are commonly called smart phones. This is because they can do everything that multiple devices did in the past. Because this is the case we should really only have one device in our hands at any one time. Instead we still carry 2 or 3 of them. So it is no wonder that when we get in our cars to drive to work we need a place to put them all.
Yet we do. We still keep a separate device for our music and sometimes people will even have multiple smart phones. They will have one for work and one for personal use. With all of these hand held devices it is really no wonder that we need more spaces to store them when we drive. Even with the many vehicles of today that are much smarter than those of the past.
The car of today already has a computer in it with a full touch screen. These computers can even place and receive phone calls and text messages. So what we should do is put the phone away when we drive, like maybe in the center console. Yet we do not. The first thing people do is look for the cup holder. Not to hold a drink, but for the phone.
So the universal cup holder is great for holding that super size drink from the local convenient store, but it will also hold our cell phone as well. Because we cannot be content with one device doing the job of many, even though that is how we design them. No matter how many jobs they do, we still want one for each.
