By Bertulda Zerna

Peru travel can take visitors to one of the most exciting places in the world to visit. The country offers both man-made and natural attractions. This very large country offers everything from remote jungle lodges located along the Amazon to snow capped mountains. While there are many opportunities for memorable experiences and adventures, it is important to know how to get to the destination and how to get around once there.

Due to the size of the country and the natural features, it can be difficult to navigate. Options by train are very limited and only offers access to the most popular tourist routes. Traveling by land can be uncomfortable and require several days. Most visitors fly whenever possible. For certain routes, the only real option is to take an intercity bus.

Several major destinations within this nation have commercial airports that allow travelers to cover a lot of are in a limited time. Not all Peruvian cities are directly connected by air. In some locations the traveler may need to fly to the nearest city and take a long boat ride to reach his jungle destination. Many flights connect through Lima. Plan to book flights several days in advance and to arrive at the airport at least 45 minutes before takeoff to ensure you are not bumped from the flight.

PeruRail offers four passenger train routes along scenic and popular journeys. Traveling by train connects passengers with Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and Cusco. In addition to PeruRail, there are two newer tourist routes connecting the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.

Traveling within cities can be done by taxi or bus. Taxis are more convenient but also more expensive. Before getting into a taxi, it is important to know local customs. In Lima, taxis are not regulated and one may encounter both licensed options as well as unlicensed. There are no meters so passengers are expected to negotiate the cost before entering the cab. In Cusco, taxis must use the standard pricing code.

Buses provide a cheap option that is very popular among tourists and locals. Many locals only use buses for transportation. Tourists will find several lines that compete for business and operate their own private bus stations. Those unfamiliar with the system can easily become frustrated when trying to figure out this system. Luggage theft is an issue on many of the lines.

While renting a car can give a traveler more independence, it is not the best or easiest option for most. It is one of the most expensive options and distances are long with difficult terrain. To rent a vehicle, one must be at least 25 years of age and present a valid driver's license and passport. A credit card is normally required for deposit.

Peru travel can be fun and exciting. However, it is not without problems. It is best to know how a party will move from one location to the next well before departure for this trip. Take some time researching the possibilities and be sure to note the warnings offered by the US State Department.
