Enjoy The Hana Road Tour

By Audrey McGuire

Hana road experience has booked its place among the most rewarding adventures in the world. It combines dozzy drives, black-sand beaches and waterfalls to reward your mind and body with natural restoration. Engineers who worked on the road ensured that the drive across the bridges and along the highway formed part of the fun.

The azure ocean lines the left with limpid water pools, natural bamboo forests, taro plants and graceful waterfalls lining up on the right. Bridges with a single lane, linked corners and cliff climbs make the drive exciting all the way. This is a magnificent get away idea with great rewards. It combines serpentine costal life with a tropical jungle.

The entire stretch is 84 kilometers of adventure from Kahului to Hana Town. Adventure is both on and off the road. Numerous stopovers to relax and enjoy as you shed off fatigue. Tension will be blown away by the wind and the scenic sunset from point to point.

The journey begins at Kahului with the Baldwin Sugar Museum next to the largest sugar factory in the state of Hawaii. There is a culture and art center that gets you in the mood as you begin your journey. Entertainment at this point includes taiko drumming, ballet, hula as well as slack key guitars.

The first stop is ten miles along the highway at the Garden of Eden Arboretum and Botanical Garden. It is hosted on a 10hectare piece of land and offers incredible sceneries for kids and adults alike. It offers a combination of pacific, tropic and native fauna and flora and was rewarded with the opening shot for the block buster Jurassic Park. There are chicken, ducks and geese roaming around to keep the children entertained.

Eleven miles turn ushers you to the Lower Puohokamoa Falls. Its waters plummet 40 meter below forming a cool pool where one can take a plunge. The Puaa Kaa State Park is situated on the 22 miles turn and offers a combination of scenic falls and tempting swimming pools. Natural trails to different parts of the park give you a natural calming feeling.

There is a unique Waianapanapa State Park that measures 49ha. It is lined with black sand beaches and its waters are treacherous. This is not the best point to swim but there are sea caves and rock arches as an alternative. Traces of the old highway can be seen at this point. The water at this point turns blood red on various occasions due to the presence of tiny shrimps.

Two other stops along the way will deliver you to Wailua Falls and Oheo Gulch. They are a must visit to complete this experience. The falls has lush vegetation along the 80 feet the water plummets. The gulch on the other hand is lined with alluring pools along the cliff. They are a reward to every visitor.

Warm hearted native villagers welcome you as you conclude the Hana road trip. The village is tucked deep into a scenic forest with world class hotel facilities. You will enjoy relaxing as you watch the sun sink deep into the water as the day ends. The clothing, fish supplies, food and wines are excellent.
