A Brief Overview Of What Roofing Entails

By Adriana Noton

Roofing is a combination of two trades, carpenters and tilers when the two are combined they make roofing. This process begins with the carpenters fixing timber trusses to a roof plate at the finished height of the house or building in question. Once the trusses are fixed, spaced and plumbed then its time for the tillers to come.

The tilers then turn up for the two jobs of felting and battening, this can be a dangerous job to say the least. First the felt is fitted to the trusses from the bottom upwards as to let any unwanted water run off. The battens are the fixed directly to the felt and into the timber horizontally ready for the tiles to be attached to.

Once the felt and battening has been completed it is time to bring in the tiles. The tiles are brought to site and delivered to the scaffolding by heavy duty forklift. The tillers will then carry these up to the roof and stack them on the top boards.

Now you have reached this stage the carpenters or chippies as they are known in the trade with prepare the roof trusses. Some trusses are made on site to fit precisely and others are ordered beforehand as to insure they are ready at this stage with no time lost. When the trusses are ready they must be lifted by a forklift into place and fixed by the carpenters.

They are fixed by battening as a temporary hold and adjusted at a later date. The adjustments included plumbing with a level or plumb line and evenly spaced to specific requirements usually chosen by the architect. At this stage the roofing felt may be brought to the top of the scaffolding and stacked for when the roofers arrive usually a day later.

The felt is then rolled out horizontally across the trusses starting from the bottom. This is done on both sides of the building and married at the apex. The roof is now ready for battens and tiles and finally the coping of your choice.

Facia boards are very important too and often underestimated when putting the finishing touches to your roofing project. Many houses will consist of red brick, red tiles and white PVC facias. This is not a good look and is easily avoided with a little forward thinking.

The colour of the roofing tiles are usually based upon the colour of the bricks chosen by the client. However, they do not always match. When considering a new roof you must make sure your property does not fall into any listed categories, for example grade one and grade two listed buildings must have specific requirements met, this will depend on the age of the house and style of surrounding buildings.
