Interesting Events In & Around Fredericksburg

By Pammy McGrath

If you wish to enjoy the experience of living in a small town but still want access to major metropolitan areas, relocating to the Texas Hill Country hamlet of Fredericksburg is an excellent idea. While you are less than 90 minutes from either San Antonio or the state capitol of Austin, Fredericksburg is a respite from the hustle and bustle. And while it might be small, there are still plenty of fun events throughout the year.

Fredericksburg was founded by German immigrants in 1846 and one of the highlight's of any trip to Fredericksburg is a visit to the downtown area that has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The town square, sometimes known by the German word Markplatz, is a center for many local activities, such as the weekly farmer's markets that occur from May until August. The vendors include nearby wineries, lavender farmers, stands from local restaurants, produce stands and much more.

Within the downtown area, there are nearly one dozen art galleries, which team up together to host the First Friday Art Walks. You can enjoy browsing through the galleries, and many of the galleries provide samples of wines grown at nearby wineries. The galleries are all within easy walking distance of each other and many are clustered on Main Street.

German culture is celebrated often in Fredericksburg and, of course, there is an annual Oktoberfest. In addition to being able to sample an abundance of delectable beers, one can enjoy the live music, take the kids to the children's fun area or shop for arts and crafts. There are also plenty of delicious German foods to enjoy. The highlight of the event is the annual chicken dance. Hundreds of participants line Main Street and engage in this popular yearly dance event.

If you are a family with young children, there are plenty of seasonal and holiday events for the kids. Children can enjoy an Easter egg hunt at the Pioneer Museum, a Fourth of July Parade and fireworks or the annual Christmas tree lighting in December. The latter is a German-themed holiday celebration that includes caroling, a German brass band and the lighting of a beautiful 26-foot-high German Christmas Pyramid.

Relocating to this area is simple with the help of the experts at Nixon Real Estate. They can find any type of home or property that you need, whether you are searching for Fredericksburg real estate or homes for sale throughout Texas Hill Country. They also can help you find a commercial property or perhaps a large parcel of land or a ranch if you wish to build your dream home.
