Fun Annual Events In The East Bay

By Madeleine Glazier

While San Francisco and Oakland certainly have their fair share of attractions and annual events, for residents of Alameda or Contra Costa County, there are plenty of fun festivals and celebrations that are held throughout the year. Here are a just a few events you might wish to attend.

Because there is abundance of native California walnut trees, Walnut Creek was named for this plentiful nut. This town's most popular festival is the annual Walnut Festival - not a surprise, right? Record shows, however, that it used to be a Grape Festival that was being held here however during Prohibition, grape farmers ditched winemaking to grow walnut trees thus a new festival was created. Every September, the town's Walnut Festival includes activities like 5K-10K run, the ever popular twilight parade, live music, arts and crafts displays and a carnival.

If it is a jazz hotspot you want, check out Concord. This is where the famous jazz musician Dave Brubeck hailed from and a park in town was in fact named after the "Take Five" artist. It is in Concord as well that Concord Records was founded which initially catered to jazz artists only. The Concord Jazz Festival was consequently founded by Concord Record's founder Carl Jefferson. Since 1969 this has been a yearly event that is embraced by many as a highly popular tradition.

While the film industry still resides mainly in Hollywood, the East Bay offers several interesting film festivals. It is in the historic Orinda Theatre that both the Orinda Film Festival and the California Independent Film Festival were hosted and held. Danville also had an annual event in town which is the Danville International Children's Film Festival. Both Berkeley and Oakland also offer many film festivals.

Both counties have a yearly county fair which includes a wide variety of events. The annual Alameda County Fair, which runs from mid-June until just after the Fourth of July, includes a petting zoo, livestock and small animal exhibits, as well as live music, arts and crafts and a huge variety of contests and competitions for all ages. The Contra Costa County Fair is a four-day affair in early June that includes a carnival, live music, livestock exhibits, cooking contests and even a monkey show.
