Relocation: Making The Process Easier

By Joyce McIntosh

If you are moving far away from your hometown, you might be both excited and nervous about this new adventure. Unlike moving and staying in your general vicinity, relocating to a new town or city poses a whole new set of challenges beyond the typical moving tasks. Here are a few tips to make relocating a little simpler.

One of the most important tasks to take care of in a big relocation move is to find good movers. You need to be sure to that your company is experienced with out-of-state or out-of-area moves and offers moving insurance. It is very unwise to hire a mover over the phone or internet. Movers need to come out and take a look at what is going to be moved to properly estimate the cost of the move. And be sure to get that estimate in writing.

Packing certainly can be a big nuisance, and moving your whole household is very expensive, so look for ways to make both processes a little easier. There is no better time than the present to get rid of any unwanted possession and donate it to a charity store. Remember, if you don't have it, you don't have to move it. So get rid of furnishings you don't like, old clothes, books you don't read, ancient magazines and anything else that you no longer like or never use. Lightening your load not only saves money, it lowers your stress level, and donating items helps out somebody else in turn.

Often when you move a long distance, you have to wait a while before moving into your new place. Perhaps you haven't selected a new home or escrow hasn't closed or you just want to make some renovations before you unpack tons of belongings. For any of these circumstances, the easiest option is to place your items in a self-storage facility.

When looking around for storage companies, select a facility with good security. This includes having security monitors installed around the premises, which also should have plenty of lights and a fence surrounding it. Because you probably don't need storage for a long time, select a company that offers monthly rental rates rather than a long term contract.

In the days and weeks leading up to the move, be sure to spend some time each evening online getting to know your new town. Locate and research the schools, find out where grocery stores and restaurants are located. Learn a little bit about the community in general, including any fun festivals and events that might take place during the year. When searching for new doctors and health providers or even services such as dry cleaners and plumbers, don't be afraid to ask neighbors and realtors for their advice.
