Blood Pressure Medication Brought Into Question.

By Mercy Tolve

Health markers such as high cholesterol, being overweight, having diabetes, smoking, being stressed out, being inactive or having high blood pressure(BP) are all signs (indicators) that you're at risk of developing problems with your heart and brain later on in life.

There are many aspects of blood pressure medications to consider for treating the condition. While your doctor is the one who will decide the treatment, you should have some knowledge about the various medications.

For example, how they react or interact with other conditions or medications. Visiting the local pharmacy can help answer questions or concerns before approaching your doctor, but information is the key.

If your systolic pressure (top number) ranges from 140 to 159 or your diastolic pressure (bottom number) ranges from 90 to 99, or both your top and bottom numbers are in this range; you have stage 1 hypertension. Diuretics might be the first type of medication that your doctor might ask you to take. Diuretics are also called water pills. This drug works by getting rid of excess water and sodium from your body. This will effectively lower your blood pressure. This drug together with a move to a healthier lifestyle might be sufficient to control your blood pressure.

However in more recent years along with cholesterol reducing medication (statins) blood pressure medication and its effectiveness is actually being brought into question. Now I would never suggest you ditch your beta blockers or your ace inhibitors and alike but it's an interesting discussion, one which I will have with you today, read on to find out more.

Other blood pressure medication such as a beta-blocker can reduce risk of strokes or heart attacks. They help protect hearts weakened by coronary artery disease. Similarly, enzyme inhibitors help to protect the kidneys for those suffering from diabetes and kidney insufficiency as well. Enzyme inhibitors also protect the heart after a major heart attack or if you have congestive heart failure.

Before we go any further with the controversial side of things let's get familiar with the basics of blood pressure.Blood pressure medication effectiveness would not have been questioned 10-15 years ago.

As with any blood pressure medication, side effects can occur. They include, but are not limited to, increased need to urinate, difficulty sleeping and dizziness. Other side effects can be some sexual dysfunction in men, nasal stuffiness or headaches.

Many people use blood pressure medication and never experience these side effects, so don't let the fear of them stop you from taking the medication. Work with your doctor to find the right medication with the least amount of side effects for your specific condition. No matter which blood pressure medication the doctor prescribes, it is important to follow instructions to the letter.
