Get Rid Of Needless Goods Before Relocating

By Sharonne Penickata

Something that the average American family discovers when it's time to relocate is exactly how much stuff they really own. What's hiding in your house may surprise you. Moving companies are educated to judge how much you possess, and can provide moving quotes that assume every closet, nook and cranny is filled with stuff.

While you are packing for the move, you'll likely run into several items which you neglected your household owned. Christmas decorations that have not been seen for ten years will emerge from the boxfull from dark corners, and collections of decade old magazines will emerge from the dusty drawers of disused furniture pieces. You should have two choices in terms of packing these odd belongings: take them, or leave them.

Your complete packing process should be viewed as a chance to pare upon a few of your belongings. There will be things that you want to keep, including photo books of past vacations and your son's first drawing. But there'll likewise be items that you honestly have no idea why you even own.

To create a good stab at eliminating those things you honestly don't need anymore, ask yourself five questions over every item before you place it inside the box. If you can answer yes to any of these questions, consider keeping the product. If the answers are no for those five, add it to the garage sale pile.

1) Have I used this item in the past half a year?

2) Is this a seasonal item, and one which I use annually?

3) Do I have an honest emotional memory linked to this thing?

4) Is this item section of a larger collection that I plan to keep?

5) Has this item been made obsolete due to a newer, faster, or upgraded version which I already own?

Nearly all items that American families haul around with them are the ones that provide no purpose, and definitely will never be used again. Some families still stubbornly store VHS tapes and VCRs, arguing that they may come in handy someday, despite having already replaced all of your movies with DVDs. Other families will quickly realize antiques and items which, while holding no value towards the family, could easily be valuable to a person else.

Sort through your belongings as you pack them, and use this opportunity to narrow down your belongings to objects that you simply really need. Make a pile of items that you simply no longer need, and determine what is trash, what needs to be recycled, and just what may be placed in a garage sale. Make sure to discard any things that are honestly broken, as no one will buy broken items. Two weeks before the movers arrive, hold a garage sale. Those items that you don't sell ought to be donated to a local charity at the end of the afternoon to assist you avoid having them included in your moving quotes.
