How To Properly Go About Marine Head Odor Removal

By Glenda Thompson

When things are decomposing they tend to release a foul stench. This is the same thing that happens in our sewers systems. In most cases, you will not notice because the holding tank is far from the house. When you are on a boat, however, this stench could make your life very uncomfortable. You will therefore, have to find a method which you can use to ensure permanent marine toilet odor control.

When you are on a boat, the stench from the head could come from either the water you use to flush, or from the holding tank. Toilets normally have a water seal, to prevent the bad smells from coming up from the sewer system. If you hoses are old and worn out, they could be the source of the stench, not even the toilet itself. If you find that the hoses are the problem, you will immediately need to replace them. This might be expensive, but it is necessary.

The odor could also be caused by using water that has organisms. This is very common when you use sea water, to flush your toilet. The small creatures in the water will die and decompose, and this will cause the foul smell. You can avoid this by having a supply of fresh water for your toilet. You also need to make sure the water in the bowl is not stagnant for long, by regularly flushing the toilet.

The stench from the holding tank could signify the presence of too many anaerobic bacteria. These do not use oxygen to break down waste, and result in the production of gases which stink, for example hydrogen sulfide. Allowing air into your tank will lead to the thriving of anaerobic bacteria. This way, all that will be released in carbon dioxide, which has no smell.

The type of treatment method you choose, will depend on your budget and your preferences. If you want quick results, you can purchase a chemical treatment. This will be effective and will kill the bacteria while getting rid of the offensive smell. They are also cheap, but can be extremely toxic to use. In case you are not in a position to empty the tank, you can even find one which will dissolve the waste.

Enzyme treatments are also popular, because they are environmental friendly and are not very toxic. These treatments do well in moderate temperatures, and in tanks that are free from other chemical residues.

You can also add live oxygen dependent bacteria, to your tank. Over time, they will reproduce and colonize the tank. This method is convenient because you will need to add the treatment very few times. It is also allows you to save in the long run, although the initial expense is high.

Consult with a professional in order to select and mix the treatments properly. In case you are wary of the process, you can hire someone to come in and handle the whole treatment process for you.
