Steps To Creating A Portable Design Wall For Quilting

By Teri Farley

A lot of people look at quilts and could only marvel the hands that made them. It takes a lot of dedication to make one and the enthusiasts know that it takes some tools as well. The most crucial of the tools that the makers need is the design wall for quilting for easier appraisal of values.

Not all people have studios and so they have to make use of whatever space they have to come up with good designs. The good thing now is that they can find areas around the house for such efforts. They can make use of the portable area for their designing endeavors. A board or flannel can already serve as a great tool for their projects.

The primary step is to place the flannel, its face down on the floor. One should locate the center of the board and keep the markings on the wrong side. This means that there should be no visible designs that would show on the flannel the moment the board is covered.

The parts of the flannel that do not fit the board can be tucked at the back side. It is very important to secure it with duct tape so it will not loosen and move about. All of the corners where there are excess flannel sheets should be tucked neatly at the back side.

It is important to tuck the flannel sheets securely with the help of duct tapes. The rest of the corners and sides will have these excess flannel sheets and that means securing them to mold the board. The flannel sheet must not be loose so that the designs would be secure.

The rest of the sides should be reinforced with tapes. Others also opt to use tuckers in securing the flannel into the board because it is more difficult to remove than tapes. When reinforcing, long pieces of the tape should be used instead of the small ones. If it is done, the board can already be flipped over and is ready for the display of different designs.

This board should take up the space in a room with allowable distance for proper appraisal of values. The thing is, this is a necessary step for the quilters to come up with the best designs. If they look at things too closely, they will not appreciate the colors and the values. If they have just about a few feet to check on things, they will pick the right colors and values for the project.

Since the board is portable, it could be used as well on meetings with other hobbyists. Transferring this could take some time but it should be worth it. Those who are taking workshops can just take their boards as they go through their classes.

The use of the design wall for quilting does not have to be a very great and expensive effort. The simple materials are all available and everyone just needs to find the correct ones to use. Taking some minute of their time trying to come up with the right designs will lessen the hassle. It will give them a good tool to create great and comfortable quilts.
