Lumber Can Be Turned Into Flame Retardant Wood

By Grace Daniels

Using lumber to erect homes and buildings has come with it a level of risk since the lumber can catch fire and endanger lives and property. Over the years many people have worked at developing methods to thwart the ability of a fire to cause as much damage as they have traditionally done. This has lead to the development of materials to make flame retardant wood structures. Some of the most common materials that can be used to lessen the chance of a fire moving swiftly include paints and varnishes that can be applied to wooden planks and make them less susceptible to burning quickly.

Contractors and homeowners can usually find everything they need to apply a new surface to help suppress the actions of fire on wood in their structures. There are a few different kinds one can purchase and not all of them will work well on limber. Many types are made to be applied to steel and will not adhere or work as well on other surfaces.

The product a person buys to help keep a blaze from quickly getting out of control is meant to be brushed or air sprayed on to walls, ceilings, floors, and other things made from lumber. The ingredients in the coatings contain chemicals that work by using a procedure called Intumescent Sublimative Ablative and Synergistic Flame Suppression. In short, what this procedure does is make the paint deteriorate and turn into a dense spongy like substance. This substance impedes the ability of the blaze to move up and around the wooden structure.

Slowing the blaze from spreading can add precious time for people to escape the burning building. Smoke and fire can overwhelm a building and people fast and it might only take a few minutes before a room becomes hot and smokey. Giving people a few extra seconds could be the difference for them getting out a door or window, or becoming trapped inside and perishing. When these coatings are used with other fire suppression methods, the chances of escaping unharmed increases dramatically.

Manufacturers understand that people have different preferences with styles and colors. This is one reason why the paint can come in almost any color and one can get the usual finishes of high gloss, gloss, and latex. They also produce varnish for those who want to maintain the natural feel of the grain of the lumber.

Most places where retardants are used are in public buildings where people tend to gather in large numbers. Places like schools and hospitals are usually concerned about the safety of the inhabitants inside the structure. Many homeowners still have to adapt this technology to residential use that could help the family evacuate a burning home.

Pretty much every wooden surface can be covered. People have painted ceiling tiles to keep fires from spreading upward into a building. Floors, walls, and stairs are other good areas to get a coating of fore resistant material.

Fire destroy buildings and objects quickly. People may need precious seconds to escape the flames so they do not also become endangered. Turning lumber into flame retardant wood helps provide the time people may need to get to safety.
