Book Into An Ulster County Bed And Breakfast And Enjoy A Break In The Country

By Jocelyn Davidson

Every city dweller needs an escape from the noise and the traffic fumes sometimes. This is especially true if you're living in a city like New York, where the fast pace can be exhausting. Luckily it's easy to have a short break in the fresh country air if you stay at an Ulster county bed and breakfast.

The county known as Ulster is within a 90-minute drive from the Big Apple. It's in the Catskills region and the Hudson Valley. Towns here include New Paltz, Rochester, Woodstock and Marlborough, as well as Kingston, which is the county seat. In between the larger towns you'll also find small hamlets full of rustic charm.

If you and your partner are outdoorsy types, spend your days exploring the forests and hills on foot, horseback of bike. Go paddling on a local lake or try catching a fish for dinner. In the winter months, enjoy some fantastic skiing before spending a romantic night in front of the fireplace.

Especially Kingston, at one time the state capital, used to play an important role in the economy of the state of New York. Goods were shipped from here to supply the people of New York City. If you're interested in history, be sure to visit the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Other museums in the region include the New York Trolley Museum and the Empire State Railway Museum. Also visit Mohonk Mountain House and the Saugerties Lighthouse and take a trip on the Catskill Mountain Railroad, which is a heritage railway that the kids will love.

If your interests lean toward the culinary, you'll find plenty to tantalize your taste buds. There are several farmer's markets where you can buy local produce, from fruits in season to handmade cheese. Alternatively, buy direct from the farm stands. Quench your thirst at one of the small breweries or wineries and if you don't want to do the cooking yourself, dine at any of the local restaurants. You'll also find quaint little stores in most towns and hamlets, selling anything from handmade jewelry to antique furniture.

The region hosts a huge variety of festivals and concerts throughout the year. After all, this is where the Woodstock Festival took place back in the Sixties. To see what's happening when, simply consult the local listings and plan your visit accordingly.

The easiest way to get to Ulster is to drive here. Having your own transport will also make it easier to explore. However, if you prefer using public transport, travel in by bus. There are regular services from New York City. You can also take the train to the station at Poughkeepsie, from where you may then travel onward by bus.

There's no bad time to visit and it all comes down to the activities you're planning on. Don't miss the region during the fall, though, to see the gorgeous display of colors. To avoid disappointment especially during this time of year, be sure to book in advance.
