All The Web Design Advice You Require

By Refugia Cogan

Creating an effective website can seem like a huge job. It doesn't matter if you're a seasoned pro or have zero experience, it's still extremely intimidating. You have to choose your colors to brand the site, create a layout, ensure navigation works; it's a lot of work! The technology and techniques are also changing constantly. The advice in this article will help you to create an attractive, interesting, and successful website.

When developing a website, you must check out how it looks in various browsers. What you're seeing in one browser may not actually be what other people are seeing. Research every popular browser that people use, and adjust your design accordingly. Make sure to also send the site to someone running a different OS to make sure those browsers are compatible.

Make sure all of your webpages actually have titles, and make sure they are descriptive. A surprising number of webpages out there are called "untitled document" or "new document". This not only denies visitors a useful piece of information to remember your site, but also absolutely destroys your SEO, since search engines weight page titles heavily when ranking sites.

Don't disable the visitor's right-click functionality. Some sites do this in order to prevent people from copying and pasting text or saving images from the site. The thing is, it doesn't work and disables other useful functions. OCR can be used to capture text from such sites, and grabbing images is as simple as taking a screenshot.

Set up your website so that people can easily search it. This is especially important if you have a large website. Place a search box in the top right corner on the home page where users can search for a term that may appear on your site. FreeFind and Google can help you install a search function on your website.

Put compelling, interesting information on your website. Good content is really more important than flashy design. When the content on your site is valuable and useful, visitors will continue visiting your site.

Do not use blinking, scrolling text or other animations. Also, steer clear of sounds or music that plays automatically. All of these things are distracting to users and provide nothing of value. In addition, connection speeds vary from one site visitor to the next, and everyone does not have the same speed. Those users with slower connections will resent the slow-loading elements of your site.

Keep your pages to a reasonable length. Add content through new pages on your site, instead of tacking it on to the end of a home page. For the most part, readers are hesitant to keep going on a page that seems to scroll on forever. If you must have a lot of content on one page, include hyperlinks at the top and in sections throughout the page. This allows users to navigate through the available content without excessive scrolling.

Once you master these few techniques, you can then begin to expand your knowledge base and ultimately expand the scope of your designs.
