All Round Training For Kilimanjaro

By Raymond Johnson

People take on a variety of physical challenges over time. Mountain climbing is one of them. As a climber, training for Kilimanjaro is one of the things you need to do, to ensure you are ready for the hike. It is an endeavor that generally has high success rates. The whole area is a tourist destination with the amazing view of the mountain that extends up into the clouds. To succeed in the climb there are factors that need to be considered before you start.

Knowing the terrain and the mountain is the first things you need to do. This will tell you which trail to use depending on your experience and your goals. You will also find out about the weather expected at the time of the climb. In the process you can also find out from other people what to expect and their experiences on the climb.

To make the climb you need to be physically fit. The training for your body should start about two months before the planned date. Taking up trail running, swimming, mountain biking, as well as weight training, may be some of the ways to get your body in good shape. The more muscle mass you have the longer your body can withstand the strain of hiking.

Part of the training involves visiting your doctor. Physical fitness is not just about how fast you can run, or how long you can hike for. A physically fit person may have a condition that will hinder them from making the climb. In some cases it may be manageable using medication but may need to be checked first. Some people also suffer from altitude sickness. For some acclimatizing to the increasing height is easy. For others altitude sickness may be fatal if not treated.

Mental stamina is required. This will give you the ability to deal with any unexpected challenges that may arise. The fatigue will also be easier to handle. You can take up exercises to increase your mental fortitude by taking on activities that push your body to the limit.

Different climates will require different gear. In most cases the tour company taken, will provide the gear required. In any case you should know the gear that will be used, how it works and how it will all fit into your luggage. The clothes are something you will need to buy yourself. They should be bought depending on the weather and terrain. Generally the tour company will give you the list of required clothing.

No one ever goes on hikes up a mountain on their own. Teamwork is key in the success of the hike. If you are going up with people you know, training with them will create a bond that may help in the harder parts of the ascent. Their strengths may also supplement your weaknesses ensuring the success of the whole party.

While training you should ensure you have all the necessary documentation to be let into the country. The right passports, visa, immunization and vaccination documentation. If you have travelling insurance, you should also ensure your documents are in order and cover the trip.
