Visiting The Suwannee River Campground

By Margaret Wagner

People go camping to enjoy a peaceful environment away from the busy towns. For you to enjoy your stay, you have to get to a suitable site. It should be away from parking lots and roads. This eliminates the possibility of vehicles settling in the sites. This is great. You will enjoy the Wilderness Setting of Suwannee River Campground. This experience is awesome.

You will be safer when you choose to settle away from parking lots. You will be away from criminals. Most do not walk for more than ten minutes to commit their crimes. Avoid settlement near the trails. Your location should be 100 feet away from such features. This protects you from disturbances by hikers and animals that go to these areas.

It is good to settle in an elevated ground in Chiefland, FL. There should be free drainage. You will be safer from floods in times of heavy rains. If you have camped in a mountainous area, you will be more comfortable. There will be fewer disturbances from mosquitoes, ticks and other insects. The problem with the highly elevated sites is lack of water. The lower land is colder during the cooler months. Cold air tends to collect in these sites.

It is good to settle in places with slight wind. Your tent should not be placed in places that are directly facing the strong breezes. An area with slightly low breeze is more comfortable for you. That place will remain to be dry, with few insects. It also keeps the fire burning. Most winds originate from the west direction. Try and settle in a place in the east.

The place that you settle in should be away from heavy rocks and boulders. The river gullies are dangerous places to settle. They may become suddenly filled in times of sudden storms. Settling under dead trees is not also safe. Their branches may break in times of strong winds. They destroy the tents that were around. Try searching for the level grounds. The area should be quite strong. This assures you that the ground will support your tent. If you happen to settle in sloppy grounds, makes sure that your head is elevated.

Be careful as you choose your temporary settlement. You should settle in areas that are near water sources that are slow moving. Spring waters are actually quieter and cleaner. It is not healthy to drink the river water. Even after treating it, there is no assurance of complete safety. As you settle in the slow moving sources, you should be careful because many insects prefer to settle here. The area allows them to breed well.

Once you have selected a suitable site, remove the hiking shoes. Boots are usually heavy. They may create some depressions in the site. Consider wearing light camping shoes. Actually it is easier to move around with them. Avoid disturbing the rare plants you come across. These plants take long to grow. Recovery may take place after several years.

You should know the dangers that are associated with camp fires. You will find that most sites have prohibited fire making. If you happen to set it up, only use the dead woods. You should burn it in present fire rings. Avoid cutting the live branches. They are not good at making fires. Build your own fire ring if there is none.
