The Experience Of Fishing In The Bahamas

By Kerri Stout

Fishing is a quite the experience for everyone regardless of their age. When it is in Bahamas, it is the ultimate experience. Fishing in the Bahamas is known world over as the best sport. There are spots for both professionals and novices.

If you want to fish using your own boat, you may have to sail through Florida to here. However, for those who want to fly in, there are charter boats as well as guides to hire. If you want to experience the deep open waters of the sea, a huge boat should be your best friend. It should measure anything from 35 feet to 40 to be spacious enough to accommodate all your equipment.

Bahamas and bone fishing are synonymous. This type of fish is known for its breathtaking speed which is definitely a challenge in catching it. The speed of these fish comes from its forked tail which is an immense advantage for hunting. They often move about in schools however, only one is to be caught at a particular time. In addition, catch and release method is employed to aid in conservancy. The best bait to use is a live shrimp.

It is not easy to fish at the reefs or bottom fishing as often known. There are breathtaking reefs in Bahamas including the third largest barrier reef in the world. To fish in the reefs, position the boat in such a way that it is in front or along the sides of the reef. Depending on what you prefer, you may choose to anchor or may be drift the boat.

When you drift, it is to make an effort to cover the reef entirely. Anchoring on the other hand is an opportunity to catch fish present in the bottom of the reef and not over. Remember to use gear that works best in catching fish from reefs. For example, the rod needs to be stout to support the large fish. If you are a beginner, it would be best to avoid the reefs.

Deep sea angling includes catching fish that live deep into the ocean beyond the areas that are lit by sunlight. This type of experience takes place further away from land at a depth of at least 30 meters below sea level. Deep sea or big game fishing is not your ordinary shallow water fish. In such water depths, deprived of sunlight and having many other challenges, that is where you will catch the big game such as sharks, tuna and marlin.

These type of fish will never be found near the shore. Mackerel is often used as bait to catch the big game. Catching the big game is not easy as they can wrestle for hours before they finally give in. Bluefin tunas are known to fight for more than four hours. When it is fatigued, the fighting becomes less vigorous and then you can reel it in.

Conservation should always be a priority before fun when catching fish. For example, catching sharks may be really fun but may hurt to their population if fishers are not careful. Their reproduction process is often slow hence should be released after catching. Also remember not to be on the open sea alone since sharks bite and it is often risky. In addition, keep off dolphins as they are protected species.
